A full or part-time career as an interior designer offers one of the few remaining opportunities for individual freedom, self-expression and financial gain. It’s also a lot of fun and can lead to varying degrees of fame and fortune.
This interior design course will show you how to navigate the interior design industry.
Using the knowledge and skills you’ll acquire through this interior design course, you may also choose to turn your own home into a showcase of your talent, with your surrounds being a live portfolio of your design ability.

Interior design is one of the few professions that does not discriminate in any way. You can be any age, sex, race or religion and become a successful interior designer. You can work from home or office. To a large degree you can choose your own hours and the nature of the work you accept.
At the end of this course, you will have the necessary training and skills to successfully handle virtually any assignment. You will have an insider’s knowledge of what the market requires, meeting client needs and how to go about providing it. You’ll find that interior design is an adventure limited only by your own imagination and flair – qualities which will be further developed throughout this course.
This introduction presents you with just some of the many opportunities you have as an interior designer, from color consultancy to corporate design. The course begins with an exploration of international design periods of the 18th and 19th centuries, to the birth of modern interior design and beyond. You will become familiar with classic furniture pieces, as well as getting to know the essential elements and principles of interior design. This course will begin to help you develop your designer’s ‘eye’, as well as help you put together an inspiration book. This course ends with assignment one.
Course two focuses on essential materials and elements – lighting and color. You will learn how to use both natural and artificial lighting effectively to bring a space to life, along with the types of lighting, styles and fixtures you can experiment with. You will learn how light and color interacts, and the psychological impact of color. This course explores how to use the color wheel and how colors interact and compliment with each other, as well as how these interactions change the look and feel of a space. You will also look at trends and special features of color and paint textures. This course ends with assignment two.
Building on course two, course three looks at how to build on your base with textiles. You will explore the world of fabrics; what are the types of fabrics. You will look at the differences between upholstered and metal furniture, and how to identify quality furnishings. This course looks at window treatments, such as curtain styles and technologies, blinds. Furthermore, you will explore floor coverings, walls and doors, the various types. These will be all tied together with cushions, slip covers and throws. Finally, you will develop your individual style through custom-made soft furnishings.
Course four is all about building your own design practice, from developing the traits you need as an interior designer, starting out, and client relations. Looks at planning and presentation for clients. You will learn how to prepare floor plans, as well as how to develop a conceptual and technical understanding elevation. You will look at example of floor plans and elevations to set you on your way. You will look at perspective drawing, gain an understanding of computer assisted design, color drawing and sample boards. You will learn how to use free-hand drawing as a tool in the creative process rather than a technical end itself.
